What is Mindfulness?
Mindfulness is the basic human ability to be fully present, aware of where you are and what you’re doing, and not being overly reactive to or feeling overwhelmed by what’s going on around or inside you. It’s about learning to pay attention, in the present moment.
No matter how far you drift away, mindfulness is always right there, ready to snap you back to wherever you are and whatever you’re doing, thinking and feeling.
If you want to know what mindfulness is, it’s best to try it for a while. Even though it’s always there, innate to who we are, it can be cultivated through proven techniques.
It’s like building a muscle – your attention can be trained and strengthened to be where you want it to be and to stay where you want it to stay, allowing you to become more conscious of our thoughts and feelings.
This reduces your tendency to work on autopilot, allowing you to experience more freedom in how you respond.
Mindfulness meditation can help you to suspend your judgment as well as being curious about how your mind works, approaching your experience with warmth and kindness, towards yourselves and others.
